Barrett’s – the story behind Peterborough’s renowned emporium
Presented by Society secretary, Julie Nicholson.
Visitors are very welcome to attend, for a fee of £3.
“Barrett’s Corner” is a phrase well known to many people of perhaps a certain age in Peterborough but where was it and what does it refer to?
This presentation traces the Barrett family history and the rise and fall of their business, T L Barrett Ltd, a major department store in Peterborough. It begins with the family’s move to the city, then focuses on Thomas Lawrence (TL) Barrett, who started as a draper’s apprentice and, through ambition and innovation, built up a retail empire in Peterborough.
The narrative details the expansion of the business, TL Barrett’s innovations in retail, his active role in the community (including serving as Mayor and churchwarden), and the succession of the business through several family generations. The story covers the growth and diversification of the store, the family’s multi-generational involvement in the business and their personal stories, including marriages and children, providing insights into family dynamics through personal correspondence. It also documents the ultimate decline of the business due to economic challenges, family health issues, and changes in the retail landscape.
The presentation concludes with the death of the last Barrett family member in the city and reflects on the legacy of the family and their once-prominent business in Peterborough. The family’s story is rich in local history, social context, and personal anecdotes, providing insight into the rise and fall of a significant local business dynasty.
