Harringworth Viaduct, a Victorian Gem

The September meeting of Peterborough Local History Society is on Thursday 11th, at 7.30pm, at St Andrew’s United Reformed Church, Ledbury Road, Netherton, Peterborough PE3 9RF

The speaker for the evening will be John Hillier, with “Harringworth Viaduct, a Victorian Gem”.

The vast 82 arch structure crossing the Welland Valley at Harringworth links Rutland with Northamptonshire and is the longest brick-built viaduct in the UK.

Built with locally made bricks, millions of them, the viaduct was opened in 1880 and John Hillier’s talk will cover the difficulties that had to be overcome by the builders, the impact that thousands of construction workers caused to the local rural community and the work that’s still needed to maintain it.

Supported by some fine images taken from the 1870s to the present day, for the first time he will unravel some of the viaduct’s secrets based on some recent research that has been undertaken.

Visitors are very welcome to attend, for a fee of £3.
